Snow totals from February 20-21 storm

Here is a map and listing of snow totals for locations in central and southern Minnesota from the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.  The south metro finished with anywhere between 12-18 inches of snow, while the northern metro finished with about a foot of snow.  There was a bit more variation in the totals than the December blizzard because of the convective nature of the system with “thundersnow” reported across the Twin Cities metro and southern Minnesota and the sharp cutoff of the heaviest snow bands that stagnated across the heart of the metro for most of the day on Sunday.

Snowstorm time lapse

Here is a time lapse video I took inside my home looking out towards my backyard patio during the last snowstorm.  The snow doesn’t accumulate very well, but you can clearly see the snow build against the patio door.

Live streaming of the great February storm

Live streaming of the weather conditions from Shakopee is now available. I'm forecasting 14-16 inches of snow with this storm, with 1-2 inches of snow per hour. Blizzard-like conditions will be possible around the metro as winds approach 30 miles an hour with higher gusts. Blizzard warnings are in effect for southwest and west central Minnesota, as far east as Sibley County.

Wake me up when it's spring

I've decided to take a hiatus from weather blogging until the spring. There just isn't enough to talk about to keep it interesting. Outside of the crazy December we had, there hasn't been any notable winter storms. Just your typical cold and snow for what feels like 24/7. For those who follow this blog, and know me, understand how miserable I've been with this winter weather. I'm sorry if you've depended on me for weather information, and I've let you down.

Super Bowl Sunday weather

Super Bowl XLV from Arlington, Texas is upon us.  The wait is finally over.  In just a few short hours, the opening kickoff between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will happen.  Many are expecting a tightly contested game.  As of the morning of the game, odds makers have the Packers three point favorites.

Much of the United States was rocked with a powerful winter storm that saw locations pick up as much as 20+ inches of snow this week.  The talk around Dallas was more about the cold and snow and less about the game itself.  From the most recent storm, Dallas picked up about five inches of snow.  Six people were injured when snow and ice fell from the roof of Cowboys Stadium onto bystanders below.

How will the weather look for the big game?

Temperatures max out around 45 to 50 degrees in the Dallas area Sunday with a slight chance of rain moving in from the north.  There is a chance of some snow mixing in with the rain, but the majority of the precipitation should fall as rain with snow staying to north of DFW.

By the end of the game, and while we are preparing ourselves for an episode of Glee, the mercury dips down to about 40 degrees.

This will be one of the colder outdoor environments that a Super Bowl has been played in.  The last time it got this cold was Super Bowl XIX in 1985, which saw a game-time temperature of 53 degrees in Palo Alto, California at Stanford Stadium. The coldest temperature for the big game was Super Bowl VI in 1972 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana where it was a chilly 39 degrees to start the game.  I don’t believe this will be the coldest Super Bowl climate, but it will certainly be in the top three.  Fans not used to this kind of weather will have the parkas on for sure!

January in Minneapolis by the numbers

The month of January has come and gone and it was a relatively quiet month as it terms of weather compared to December.  MSP airport recorded 17 inches of snow for the month, which raised the seasonal snow total to 60.4 inches.  January was notable for being cold overall. Out of the 31 days, we hit the freezing mark on the 29th, otherwise we were below freezing during the month.  The last time the temperature failed to reach at least 32 degrees for an entire calendar month was December 1983.  Ironically, the 1983-84 winter season would see the highest snow total on record at 98.6 inches.

February is looking to be much of the same.  According to the Climate Prediction Center, the Upper Midwest is expected to see below average temperatures and around average precipitation chances.

The average temperature for February in the Twin Cities is 26°F.  If you’re interested in more climate data for February, click here for the information.  February brings the home stretch of winter.  One month away until the meteorological start of spring!
